VIRTUAL SIGNING CEREMONY OF THE MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MoU) BETWEEN TOBA CALDERA UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK, INDONESIA, LANGKAWI UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK, MALAYSIA, AND SATUN UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK, THAILAND

A virtual signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Geopark Cooperation between Toba Caldera UNESCO Global Geopark, Indonesia, Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, Malaysia, and Satun UNESCO Global Geopark, Thailand had been successfully held on 6 August 2021.


The virtual signing ceremony was witnessed by the H.E. Dato’ Sri Mustapa bin Mohamed, Minister in Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Malaysia chaired the 27th IMT-GT Ministerial Meeting, with the attendance of H.E. Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Republic of Indonesia, and H.E. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, during the IMT-GT 27th Ministerial Meeting. Also in the the MoU signing ceremony were IMT-GT Senior Officials, Working Groups members, representatives of relevant Ministries/Agencies, States/Provinces and Centre for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation as the meeting secretariat.


Considering tourism as the industry that is being hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic, IMT-GT countries in consensus have agreed to focus their cooperation on this area, to ensure the tourism industry makes a swift recovery, once the pandemic is under control
This MoU will serve as the catalyst to promote international cooperation and exchange experience between UNESCO Global Geoparks of Toba Caldera, Langkawi, and Satun on a reciprocal basis of respect for the independence and equal status of each geopark.
