The Director of Centre for Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle Subregional Cooperation (CIMT) paid a courtesy call on Prof. Dr. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) on 2 August 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Hirohito Toda, Deputy Executive Secretary for Partnerships and Coordination and Mr. Curt Garrigan, Chief of the Sustainable Urban Development Section of the Environment and Development Division at UN ESCAP.

Both parties had a productive discussion regarding the ongoing collaboration between CIMT and UN ESCAP on the IMT-GT Transboundary Pilot Local Facilitation under the Urban Act project. Notably, six cities from the IMT-GT region successfully submitted expressions of interest for the “Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia Growth Triangle Green City Solid Waste Management Facility” to the City Climate Finance Gap Fund (Gap Fund) which was a key deliverable in 2023. This submission enables these cities to receive technical assistance for pre-feasibility studies on solid waste management projects.

Additionally, both sides expressed interest to further strengthen the current collaboration, by expanding the development of Green City Action Plans (GCAP) to more cities within IMT-GT, with the aim to collectively enhance the sustainability and liveability of the subregion.
