Strengthening SME’s Capacity for Halal Market

Introduction | The global halal market – with some estimates putting it at present at USD2.3 trillion in the food and non-food sector – is indeed a big business. The fact that it is driven by the growing purchasing power as well as increased awareness of halal benefits among both Muslims and non-Muslims, presents a truly exciting opportunity for the private sector including potential SMEs to serve the global market.

Human capability building is the success factor for sustainability in the competitive market of the halal industry. These must-have factors include the development of the industry know-how and good industry practices. Taking the first steps to establish and penetrating the halal market can be difficult and painstaking, in which SMEs need to be trained to enhance their halal industry knowledge and skills.

Halal Certification is an assurance for consumer’s trust. Therefore, achieving the Halal certification is the primary requirement for enterprises to open a gateway to the global halal economy.

To address this requirement, the Centre for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation (CIMT) in collaboration with the IMT-GT Working Group of Halal Products and Services and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) is organizing the comprehensive training programme prioritised to assist local businesses in the IMT-GT subregion. The capacity-building programme covers all aspects of Halal industry topics in preparing the enterprise for Halal certification application. This includes Halal theory, Halal certification, and the practical part of Halal management systems. The training courses are instructed by Halal Development Corporation Berhad (HDC), an agency under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Malaysia.

Through the programmes, the SMEs stand to learn fundamentals and quality system of halal industry and applying knowledge to strengthen their operation and enhancing their capacity to penetrate both local halal and international markets.

Registration | CIMT with Halal Development Corporation (HDC) Malaysia and IsDB will be organising a four-series Halal Capacity Development Programme. Each series consists of 4 days training programme. The first batch is expected to be started on 27th September 2021.
