ADVANCING GREEN URBAN INITIATIVES: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 6th IMT-GT GREEN CITIES MAYOR COUNCIL MEETING

On August 8th, 2023, the 6th IMT-GT Green Cities Mayor Council (GCMC) meeting was successfully held at Casuarina Hotel in Ipoh, Perak. The meeting chaired by Hon. Pol. Lt. Gen. Sakorn Thongmumee, Mayor of Hat Yai-Thailand and attended by delegation from IMT-GT member countries; YBhg. Dato’ Haji Rumaizi bin Baharin Md Daud, Mayor of Ipoh, Malaysia’s Head of Delegation, and Kopli Ansori, Regent of Lebong Regency, Indonesia’s Head of Delegation. Other attendees, among other Hon. Mr. Songchai Wongwatcharadamrong, Mayor of Thungsong; Hon. Dato’ Ir. Rajendran a/l P. Anthony, Mayor of Penang Islands; Hon. Dato’ Haji Mohd Yusri bin Haji Md Daud, Mayor of Alor Setar City; Hon. Dato’ Masri Bin Haji Razali Mayor of Seremban; Mr. Firdaus Dahlan, Director of CIMT, and representatives from UN-ESCAP and IGES CCET who joined virtually.

The meeting provided a crucial platform to comprehensively review the progress and activities under the IMT-GT Sustainable Development Framework (SUDF) 2019-2036. Cities showcased unwavering commitment to a sustainable future, with discussions covering diverse areas such as transport, waste management, renewable energy, carbon literacy, circular economy, biodiversity, and education for sustainable development. The ultimate aim of the meeting is to support cities in IMT-GT member countries to diminish carbon footprint and cultivate vibrant urban green spaces, fostering a healthier and more eco-friendly urban environment.
