On 7-8 July 2022, the Government of Malaysia under the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister’s Department, in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) and the IMT-GT Joint Business Council (JBC) Malaysia, convened the IMT-GT & BIMP-EAGA GREEN CITY ACTION PLAN KICK-OFF: BUILDING BACK BETTER.

The two-day event that took place in Langkawi was finally officiated by the Honourable Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy), through the symbolic handover of a mangrove tree by children representative of Malaysian Eco-Schools to the Minister. This gesture emphasised Malaysia’s exemplary view that We do not inherit the world from our ancestors – but we borrow it from our children.

The event aims to support the development of Green City Action Plans (GCAPs) in 14 Malaysian cities over the next five years under the IMT-GT and BIMP East ASEAN Growth Area subregional cooperation. The GCAPs, developed through a scientific and systematic methodology, will identify constraints, gaps and opportunities for resilient, low-carbon development in urban areas. Identified pipelines of infrastructure projects will catalyse government and private sector investments.
CIMT congratulates the successful event and wish to extend special appreciation to EPU (Unit Perancang Ekonomi – Laman Rasmi), ADB, IMTGT JBC Malaysia, and ICLEI in their commitment in advancing the realisation of the IMT-GT Vision 2036, which is to achieve at least 40 GCAP by the year 2036.
