The Centre for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation (CIMT) participated in a Stakeholders Workshop for the Joint BIMP-EAGA and IMT-GT Blue Economy Strategy (BES) 2030, held from 19-21 June 2024. The workshop, organised by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aimed to further develop a collaborative strategy for the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources in the BIMP East ASEAN Growth Area and IMT-GT subregions.
Honored by the presence of Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah, Mayor of Kota Kinabalu City, who delivered the keynote address, the workshop convened representatives from BIMP-EAGA and IMT-GT national secretariats, BIMP-FC, CIMT, and national focal points across key sectors such as environment, agriculture and tourism. Discussions focused on assessing challenges and opportunities for blue economy development, identifying key elements for the joint strategy, and outlining measures for its implementation.
Inputs received during the workshop will be used to refine the joint BES 2030, which will undergo further discussion within BIMP-EAGA and IMT-GT clusters and working groups in the coming months. The draft BES 2030 is expected to be presented at the BIMP-EAGA and IMT-GT Ministerial Meetings later this year.
The participation of IMT-GT in this workshop signifies its strong commitment in fostering a robust blue economy in the sub-region. By actively engaging in the development of this important document, it underlines the importance placed by Member Countries in promoting the sustainable management of shared marine resources and driving economic growth that benefits all stakeholders.
