On 13 August 2024, the Centre for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, convened the IMT-GT Tourism and Transport Dialogue on Samosir Island, North Sumatra, Indonesia. This significant event brought together government officials, business representatives, academic experts, and local authorities to discuss and explore opportunities for integrating subregional tourism with a cohesive transport network, aimed at enhancing the mobility of tourists throughout the subregion.
The dialogues covered government initiatives aimed at promoting subregional tourism integration and sustainability in both the tourism and transport sectors, with a focus on collaborative efforts to create a sustainable tourism ecosystem and optimize transport networks. Additionally, the discussions addressed the role of the private sector in achieving seamless integration, exploring challenges such as balancing profitability with environmental stewardship and strategies to overcome these challenges.
The discussion highlighted the need for increased collaboration to expand and implement innovations in sustainable tourism and transport. Key points included addressing transport connectivity issues and partnering with airliners or transport operators to open new routes, streamlining policies for sustainable tourism and seamless transport, and promoting joint tourism marketing for the subregion.
