4th IMT-GT UNIVERSITY NETWORK (UNINET) COUNCIL MEETING 24-25 JULY 2024, PATTANI, THAILAND

University leaders from across the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) gathered at Prince of Songkhla University (PSU) in Pattani, Thailand, for the 4th IMT-GT University Network (UNINET) Council Meeting from 24 – 25 July 2024. The meeting saw a strong showing of support for the subregional cooperation, with two Rectors and six Vice Rectors representing Indonesia, one Vice Chancellor and six Deans from Malaysia, and two Vice Presidents from Thailand. The high-level attendance of these officials highlighted the importance of the IMT-GT UNINET network in fostering ties across the region.

The meeting centered on strengthening the partnership between UNINET and the IMT-GT Working Groups. Discussions explored avenues for more direct involvement in ongoing projects and initiatives, aiming to leverage the collective expertise and resources of the participating universities to address key challenges and opportunities within the IMT-GT focus areas.

The meeting also delved into key strategic priorities for UNINET, including exploring opportunities for enhanced academic partnerships and student mobility within the IMT-GT region, ensuring the efficient and sustainable management of UNINET’s financial resources, and developing a strategic roadmap for UNINET’s future activities.

The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of commitment to strengthening collaboration within the IMT-GT academic community. UNINET aims to play a pivotal role in promoting research, knowledge exchange, and capacity building, contributing to the sustainable development of the region.

During the two-day meeting, delegates had the opportunity to explore the Yaring and Yarang districts. In Yaring, they visited the historic Old Palace, gaining insight into the rich cultural heritage of the Malay people in Pattani. In Yarang, they ventured into the Kranji Forest and explored the Ancient City, one of the largest historical city in Southern Thailand. These site visits allowed the delegates to engage directly with the local community, deepening their understanding and appreciation for the region’s history and culture.
