CIMT UPDATE TO THE HON. DATO’ SRI MUSTAPA BIN MOHAMED, MINISTER IN PRIME MINISTER’S DEPARTMENT (ECONOMY) OF MALAYSIA, AS THE CURRENT STANDING CHAIR OF IMT-GT MINISTERS

Putrajaya, 3 June 2022 – The Centre for Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle Subregional Cooperation (CIMT) was invited to the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) of Malaysia, to update on the progress of IMT-GT development cooperation in the subregion.

Mr. Firdaus Dahlan, the Director of CIMT had the opportunity to update Hon. Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) of Malaysia, on the current development of the IMT-GT subregional cooperation, and preparation for the upcoming 28th IMT-GT Ministerial Meeting. 

Several key updates and initiatives were highlighted during the meeting, among others; the subregional cooperation on tourism recovery; strengthening IMT-GT cross border and Physical Connectivity Projects (PCPs), progress on the acceptance of India as the first country development partner of IMT-GT. In this regard, the Director also updated the Minister on the proposal to conduct the 1st IMT-GT and India Ministerial Meeting on the occasion of the 28th IMT-GT Ministerial Meeting, expected to be held in Phuket, Thailand on 16 September 2022.

As the way forward for the IMT-GT cooperation, the Minister stressed the importance of strengthening the IMT-GT cooperation and demonstrating concrete programs and projects with meaningful impacts for the people in the subregion – especially those who reside in the bordering area of the three countries. In doing so, promotion of IMT-GT through cross-border projects and by engaging with more development and strategic partners could further be explored.
